It wasn’t until I was at St. Andrews did I realize how lucky I was to grow up in a Western country with a dynamic cultural background. We sat there in the common room that overlooked the stone-floored patio with unattainable patches of green and talked about understanding different languages and the power of being able to explore various literature in those languages that I grew up with. It was precisely at that moment did I unearthed a litany of unique experiences and opportunities I had and took completely for granted. The Indian culture is colored with vibrance, compassion and a sophistication that is only maintained through story passed orally. One thing that I plan on taking with me from my youth to today and to pass-on to my offspring are a pair of earrings encrusted with the jewels and pearls of my family’s royal heritage depicting grace and grandeur of my ancestors. But being brought up in the Western world, I want to celebrate Mother’s day and continue to write my ancestor’s story through the generations as our family, more accurately empire, grow and foster. Jewels and gems were the currency of pride and prestige and I’m doing my best to preserve my heritage, but adapt and adopt new pieces into our repertoire of items that accurately shows my family’s story. I want to take these rose-bud earrings and be able to pass them onto my children to symbolize love, honor and faith.
