Night at the Ceilidh

I was one of those ignorant Americans when I first moved to Scotland and had not even considered looking up Scottish traditions. It wasn’t until I started university and would frequent to local cafes and other vendors that I realize that there was so much to the Scottish culture that was even special and unique to the British from England. The Scottish has specific things they are known for that isn’t just Scotch, tartans, and golf. They’re also known for their Ceilidhs!

My friends and I started frequenting Forgan’s in St. Andrews after they opened because they offered a range of food and choices that met every budget. One of the things they organized in the evenings was a ceilidh! A ceilidh directly translates into a social even where traditional Scottish folk music is sung, traditionally danced, and incorporates storytelling. It was a dance that reminded me a little bit like square dancing in America, but a little bit different on the rhythm.

Here are some photos from just one of our visits to Forgan’s ceilidh!
