After living in Ohio, DC, NYC, Scotland, and now in London, I think it’s safe to say I’m starting to understand how to overcome winter blues. I remember my frist winter in Ohio, I found it magical until after winter break I was hit with dread. The beautiful snow was more slush and there was lots of it. Day just felt short all around and it was overwhelming and suffocating. This is the true feeling of winter blues. When I moved to Scotland, it magnified at first because daylight hours are barely there since St. Andrews is so far north on the same magnitude at Moscow. It adapted and refined tips and ideas to overcome winter blues and I thought I would share them with you here! If you have a moment, I’d love for you to share your tips on how to overcome winter blues!

Wake Up Earlier
This may sound annoying and difficult to do, but I highly suggest it! Even though the sun rises later, nothing is more magical than enjoying a cup of coffee with a sunrise. This way you can also maximize your time with the sun. It’s important to take advantage of every single minute of it to help fight off the winter blues. Early mornings also mean early evenings and this way you can sleep through the time that most of us feel the winter blues!
Moisturize
If you’re like me, then your appearance has an impact on how you feel. I’m not saying I need a manicure and full face of makeup, but I do need to feel confident in my own skin. One of the hardest things about winter are the dry skin and lips. I make a point to spend evenings streaming a favorite tv show and moisturizing by body and face. I’ll light a candle or have some essential oils going to help with my mood too. The little bit of self-care really helps lift the spirit!
Act on Your Resolutions
Winter usually start becoming a drag near the end of January and we’ve still got some of the harshest winter weather ahead of us! Most people forget about their resolutions after the month of January. I like to plan out my resolutions or goals and act on them a little bit each week. This way I feel like I’m accomplishing something during the months and feel good about it!

Take Up A Hobby
This is something that I love doing. A few winters ago, I decided to teach myself chess. It was a hobby that I picked up quite easily and got to share it with friends and family. It kept me active and I ended up downloading a game on my phone to continue playing. If there is a hobby or skill you’re itching to try then winter might be the best time to do it! Maybe learn a musical instrument? Take up knitting and watch old films when doing it?
Launch an Airbnb Experience
So many people travel during the winter months because it’s the only time they get off and sometimes destinations are so much cheaper. If you’re looking to earn a little more after the holidays or even want to save up for an epic summer trip, then definitely launch an Airbnb Experience! You don’t have to run it full-time or the entire year, but can just run it for the winter months alone. If you do plan on launching one, then make sure you read up on how to host a successful Airbnb Experience.
Embrace the Season
Sometimes it’s the best to just live in the present. I know that might be harder to listen to right now, but so many people don’t get to see or experience snow in the world! I was one of those people for a long time. I like to write up a winter bucket list right after Christmas holiday and include activities like go sledding, build a snowman, drink hot chocolate, learn to bake a new recipe. Try to list out only wintery activities and it will be so much fun!
