Back in Andalusia

It was an early morning to the airport and the air was quite cold that I probably should have worn something with sleeves. Being a bit enthusiastic about the weather, I forgone to light jacket option and grabbed a black cab to the city’s airport. Checked-in, through security, straight onto the chartered flight on the airplane—and I found myself in a complete daze and then heavy lids straight to sleep in between the British grey gloom.

The sun’s warmth woke me up and looking out onto the landscape, dry land and little white buildings freckled about in clusters, which I assumed were Spanish villages. I just thought about all the sherry, dry red wine and olive oil being consumed and perhaps made there—but mostly was just romanticizing. We were back in Andalusia!

As we got closer to the airport, the lands became more populated and it reminded me of being in Andalusia in 2011 when I grabbed a large backpack and decided to buy a round trip ticket with 90 days between arrival and departure. Not an ounce of knowledge of where to go, about the culture or a plan—but I knew I needed to explore a portion of Europe since most of my travels before that was India or the Middle East. The dynastic history of the Moorish Empire drew me to south of Spain… It’s such a strange feeling to be back. This time as a professional, someone who prefers to look at a place for its culture, community and lifestyle rather than just the nightlife and making friends along the way without a plan blueprinted.

Landed and through customs, collected my bags and straight to our apartment for the week, I knew I was back in Spain as evidenced by the slow cadence of everything, the helpful people and my glistening skin from the sweat. One thing you notice when you’re in this country as that your body reacts to the heat and sun most differently than anywhere in the world. A touch of olive in my skin, light pink cheeks and the sweat actually felt good after a few weeks of trying to navigate the British weather in Andalusia.

We were famished and thought after dropping off our bags we wanted to quickly grab a few bits to make sandwiches at home. We walked down a neighborhood street and people were packing up for a few hours of siesta. People still greeting us, I couldn’t help but notice how satisfied people in this country always look. I had once read that some of the longest living people are the Spanish because their mid-afternoon breaks, which is probably an export the country needs to look into.

A plate of fresh bread from the downstairs panaderia, a fleshy tomato, ripe avocado and a decent helping of anchovy stuffed olives—we took a {cold} shower and then a nap to outrun the heat a bit.

We planned to wake up and properly embrace the Andalusia mindset. We decided to dress in our brightest and grab a cold beer here and a little tapa there and we perused shops and embraced the single ripples of day that turned into evening…
