Zaanse Schans: Discover Dutch Windmills

Historic Dutch Windmills

It feels like ages ago that I was in Amsterdam with Kristabel and though it feels like long time, when I look back it was truly a wonderful time. Both Kristabel and I had already been to Amsterdam and so we decided to compile a list of unique things to do in Amsterdam that were obviously do something that made for a good photo opportunity.

We decided a little half-day trip was the best idea to get out of the city centre and truly embrace what the Dutch have to offer. Zaanse Schans is a little neighborhood in the town of Zaandam, not too far from Amsterdam. They’re known for their historic windmills and green wooden houses based around a waterways and canals to recreate the look of an 18th/19th century village.

The wooden windmills are actually still active today as it was a few centuries ago. One of the windmills, that sits in the back, is open for free and you can see how flaxseed is pressed by the wheels that are engined with the wind to make linseed oil. The pulped remains of the flaxseed is then encased into bricks and turned into food for the horses, leaving no waste. Each windmill produces something completely different and is actually the source of income for a family.

Once the products are made, the canal that Zaanse Schans sits on a canal that connects to a series of waterways that can take you to Amsterdam by boat in under 2 hours. A very effective system, if you ask me.

A lot of people ask me if what you see in the photos is what I usually wear when traveling. Most of the time, yes. I do make frequent stops back at my hotel or wherever I’m staying for a bit of a rest and regrouping. For trips out of the city, like this one to Zaanse Schans, was all about efficiency and time. I ended up building an outfit like I normally would and pair it with {one of three} Supergas I have. They’re lightweight and easy to style with any outfit!
