A Perfect Weekend in Dublin: Food, Culture, and History, and more…
Taking time off is one of the hardest things for me to do. Working in tech startups, I’m used to seeing the immediate impact of my efforts, which often leads me to treat weekends as my only respite. So, before starting an epic tour of Ireland with friends, I decided to give myself a couple of days to unwind solo in Dublin. It’s a city that’s equally enjoyable to explore with companions or on your own.
If you’re planning a weekend in Dublin, let me share how I spent mine. From immersing myself in the city’s rich history to indulging in world-class food and exploring its vibrant neighborhoods, Dublin offers an unforgettable mix of experiences. Here are the highlights from my itinerary to inspire your next trip.

Experience
Trinity College + Book of Kells
No trip to Dublin is complete without a visit to Trinity College. I started my weekend with the Book of Kells Experience, marveling at the intricate medieval manuscript. The Long Room Library, with its towering shelves and iconic barrel-vaulted ceiling, was a highlight—a book lover’s paradise. I spent time soaking in the serene atmosphere and imagining the centuries of history contained within those walls. Pro tip: I booked an early morning experience and had lots of the space on my own. The audio guide was the only thing I needed and I could tell I enjoyed the experience a lot more than my fellow tour group members because of it.
Guinness Storehouse
Later, I ventured to the Guinness Storehouse, a must-see for beer enthusiasts and still fun for those just curious about the popular drink. The interactive exhibits about brewing history were fascinating, from the story of Arthur Guinness to the craft of perfecting the stout. The panoramic views of Dublin from the Gravity Bar made the pint of Guinness taste even better. It’s a great spot to reflect on the city’s industrial heritage. For someone who isn’t too keen on tourist traps, this honestly was one of my top highlights from my weekend in Dublin.
Irish Coffee at Temple Bar
After a day of exploration, I treated myself to a classic Irish coffee at Temple Bar. While the area is touristy, the lively atmosphere and traditional music make it worth a stop. The warmth of the coffee paired with Irish whiskey was the perfect pick-me-up as I soaked in the vibrant energy of the neighborhood. Not a coffee fan? They’ve got their own whiskey and quite the selection of Irish-inspired cocktails.

Eat
Variety Jones
Dinner at Variety Jones was a true highlight. I opted for the chef’s table experience, which allowed me to see the artistry behind each dish. The intimate atmosphere and carefully curated tasting menu showcased the best of Irish produce with a modern twist. Each bite was an adventure, making it an unforgettable culinary experience. They book up the moment they open reservations, so you’ll have to book way in advance. Did I wake up in the middle of the night to snag a seat? Yes, I did. Did I regret missing out on quality sleep? Not at all.
MisterS
A meal at MisterS introduced me to their famous rendang spring rolls. The fusion of bold flavors and crispy texture made this dish unforgettable. The menu’s creativity and attention to detail are a testament to Dublin’s evolving food scene. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, but I did wish I was with more people to enjoy the other dishes!
Bread41
Bread41 is known for its exceptional artisanal baked goods, crafted with organic and sustainably sourced ingredients. Their focus on sourdough breads and innovative pastries has made them a favorite among locals and visitors alike. For pick-me-up one morning, I stopped by Bread41 to try their rye chocolate chip cookies. The rich, chewy cookies paired perfectly with a cup of coffee. The bakery’s bustling energy and artisan offerings make it a must-visit for anyone who loves fresh, quality pastries. Be prepared to stand in a queue, but otherwise it’s worth it!
Murphy’s Ice Cream
A sweet treat from Murphy’s Ice Cream was a must. Their unique flavors, like sea salt and Irish cream, highlight Irish ingredients in the best way. Each scoop felt like a taste of Ireland’s countryside. Though it’s not unique to Dublin (actually to Dingle), but I’ve seen them pop up in a couple of food shows, so it only made sense to grab a scoop (or two)!
Butler’s Chocolates
Looking to warm up? Grab a hot chocolate from Butler’s. I also picked up a box of Butler’s Chocolates as a souvenir (and enjoyed a few pieces myself). The creamy, luxurious chocolates are quintessentially Irish and make for a delightful gift to bring back home.

Explore
St. Stephen’s Green
I spent an morning in St. Stephen’s Green, a beautiful park perfect for people-watching. Locals and tourists alike enjoy its peaceful paths and vibrant flowerbeds. The historical significance of the park, with its monuments and statues, adds another layer to its charm.
Silicon Docks
As someone who works in tech, I was intrigued by Dublin’s Silicon Docks. It’s fascinating to see the juxtaposition of modern architecture and historic surroundings, with global tech giants nestled along the waterfront. Walking along the docks, I couldn’t help but admire the innovation and growth happening in this corner of the city. There’s plenty of views of the city, modern art and architecture, and restaurants and shops to enjoy in the area.
Camden Street
I spent an evening on Camden Street, soaking up its lively energy. Known for its eclectic mix of bars, restaurants, and live music venues, it’s a hotspot for nightlife. Whelan’s was the perfect spot for drinks and live entertainment, while dinner at MisterS rounded out the night beautifully. The street’s vibrant atmosphere captures the heart of modern Dublin.
Merrion Square Park
A visit to Merrion Square Park offered a glimpse into Dublin’s literary heritage. The Oscar Wilde statue, surrounded by witty quotes, was a highlight. The nearby colorful Georgian doors provided the perfect backdrop for photos, showcasing Dublin’s architectural charm.

Shop
Books Upstairs
For book lovers, Books Upstairs is a charming store with a curated selection of Irish literature and international titles. I spent time browsing their cozy upstairs cafe, enjoying the tranquil space surrounded by literary treasures. I ended up picking up the latest Intermezzo by Sally Rooney and The Edge of Solitude by my friend Katie Hale–who you might remember from my grad school days and my trip to the Lake District.
Article
Colors and patterns are what the Irish do well. I found beautiful homeware and gifts at Article, a stylish shop with a distinctly Irish flair. Their collection of ceramics and textiles makes it a great place to find unique souvenirs.
Irish Design Shop
The Irish Design Shop showcased handcrafted jewelry and home goods, perfect for unique souvenirs. Each piece reflects Ireland’s rich tradition of craftsmanship. I picked up an Irish turf fire candle that was also burning whilst I was exploring the shop.
Industry & Co
At Industry & Co, I admired the blend of modern and vintage design in their homeware and furniture collections. It’s a haven for anyone who loves contemporary aesthetics with a nod to Irish heritage. Of course they have Hay and I couldn’t resist picking up a couple of colorful trinkets for my home.
Kilkenny Design
A stop at Kilkenny Design introduced me to a wide range of Irish crafts, from ceramics to textiles. Their commitment to showcasing local artisans makes it a must-visit for those who appreciate unique, high-quality goods. If you’re looking for a really nice aran sweater or wool scarf, then this is where you’ll want to get it.
Hodges Figgis
Finally, I visited Ireland’s oldest bookshop, Hodges Figgis, where I couldn’t resist their beautifully designed exclusive editions of Irish books. I picked up a copy of Dubliners by James Joyce, a collection of short stories that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the city. The store’s rich history and welcoming ambiance make it a literary gem.

Dublin is a city that truly has it all: history, culture, fantastic food, and friendly locals. Whether you’re exploring its literary past, indulging in world-class dining, or simply soaking in the lively atmosphere, a weekend here is sure to leave you wanting more. With every corner of the city offering something unique, Dublin captures the heart of every traveler. Have you been to Dublin? What were your favorite spots?
